By rail and by sea

Scott Conarroe (b. 1974) grew up in Western Canada. He studied at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is occasional faculty at Emily Carr. Scott has received numerous awards including grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the 2011 Duke and Duchess of York Prize for Photography and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has been artist-in-residence at Light Work (Syracuse US), Villa Sträuli (Winterthur CH), FLACC (Genk BE) and ArtBellwald (Bellwald CH), and a Canadian Forces Civilian Artist in the Arctic. He lives in Zurich.

Scott's studies of landscape and the built environment evoke romantic pictorial traditions and locate the present within a sweep of history. By Rail (2008) and By Sea (2009-11) look at North American civilization along its railways and coastline perimeter. The Great Eastern (2012 - ongoing) surveys China against the backdrop of massive rail expansion, and Frontière, Frontiera, Grenze (2013 - ongoing) considers the moveable borders Alps nations devised in response to glacial melting and watershed drift.
